Sacramento sheriff bomb squad detonates explosive found under vehicle in North Highlands
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office safely detonated an explosive device found underneath a vehicle Wednesday in a North Highlands neighborhood.
Sgt. Tess Deterding, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, said the bomb squad, known officially as the Explosive Ordnance Detail, believes the explosive device “burned out before it a had a chance to reach its full capability.”
She said the investigation is ongoing in collaboration with arson detectives. No further information about the investigation was released Wednesday evening.
Around 11:20 a.m., sheriff’s deputies were called to the 3700 block of Plymouth Drive near Cantel Way and just west of Watt Avenue for a report of a suspicious device found under a vehicle. The sheriff’s bomb squad was called to the scene to investigate.
Deputies blocked residential streets in the area to keep bystanders away as a precaution. The bomb squad used a robot to remove the explosive device from under the vehicle, Deterding said.
Once the device was removed, the bomb squad remotely detonated the explosive, “rendering it safe and also saving the vehicle,” Deterding said. By 5 p.m., the area was reopened.
