Man arrested after throwing wife out of car, leading officers on chase on Interstate 80
A pursuit that started in Sacramento ended about 50 miles away on Interstate 80 in Placer County after California Highway Patrol officers used a spike strip to stop the vehicle and arrest its driver.
The eastbound lanes of I-80 were shutdown as CHP officers approached the disabled vehicle to take the driver into custody, said Officer David Martinez, a spokesman for the CHP’s Auburn office.
Martinez said the chase began after an incident reported about 3:30 p.m. near Watt Avenue and San Ysidro Way in Sacramento, where a husband reportedly got his wife out of a blue Subaru and left. He said he did not know exactly how the husband got his wife out of the vehicle.
CHP officers from the North Sacramento office started chasing the wagon on Interstate 80 near Watt Avenue, according to Martinez. Those officers continued to chasing the Subaru east into Placer County.
Martinez said officers tried twice to use spike strips to disable the vehicle, but those attempts were unsuccessful. He said the officers tried a third time and flattened the vehicle’s tires near Secret Town.
The Subaru came to a stop on I-80 east of Gold Run at 4:18 p.m., but the driver remained in the vehicle for another 12 minutes, Martinez said. The driver decided to come out and surrendered without further incident.
The officers were forced to shutdown the freeway’s eastbound lanes until the suspect was taken into custody and authorities could remove the Subaru from the freeway.
The Sacramento Police Department later took custody of the suspect, Martinez said. The suspect’s name, age and city of residence was unavailable Wednesday night.
By 5:07 p.m., all eastbound lanes had reopened, but traffic was moving slow, Placer County sheriff’s officials said. Sheriff’s deputies also had joined the pursuit before it ended.
