A Sacramento man has been convicted of murder after cutting and stabbing a man with a “decorative samurai sword” in 2018, prosecutors said.

A jury on Oct. 18 found Michael Womack, 57, guilty of second-degree murder.

Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies arrested Womack on Sept. 21, 2018, following a deadly fight in the 3700 block of Bainbridge Drive in North Highlands.

The Sheriff’s Office in a statement at the time said the victim died at a hospital after suffering multiple stab wounds, but did not specify that the suspect had used a sword.

The victim was Greg Prescott, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Monday, and the 2018 homicide stemmed from an altercation that started inside Prescott’s home.

“The victim ran away from the home and Womack chased him with a decorative samurai sword,” the news release said. “Womack caught the victim and stabbed and cut him multiple times with the sword.”

A Sacramento Superior Court jury also found true a weapon enhancement, according to the news release.

Womack remains in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail downtown and is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 17, court records show. He faces a maximum of 16 years to life in prison, according to the DA.
