Sacramento man dies in car crash near Howe Avenue and Highway 50 onramp, CHP says
A Sacramento man died in a single-vehicle crash early Friday morning after his car failed to negotiate a turn from Howe Avenue and struck a concrete median on an on-ramp to Highway 50, the California Highway Patrol said.
Leondre Larry Barnett, 28, died in the crash that was reported shortly after 1:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
Barnett was driving a 2011 Mercedes sedan heading north on Howe Avenue in the College/Glen area of Sacramento. A witness account and physical evidence at the scene showed the Mercedes was moving at a high rate of speed as it entered the northbound Howe Avenue onramp to the Highway 50 westbound lanes, according to the CHP South Sacramento Area Office.
The CHP said Barnett failed to negotiate the turn in the road, and the Mercedes hit a raised concrete median. The car continued in a northerly direction, crossed to the Howe Avenue offramp and struck a concrete curb at the north end of the offramp.
The Mercedes went off the road and down a dirt embankment, where the car overturned and came to rest on its roof, the CHP reported.
Barnett, who was the only person in the car, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and suffered major injuries, the CHP said. He was taken by ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where he was pronounced dead.
The CHP said the crash remained under investigation, and it was unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
