Sacramento man dies in Southern California after vehicle hits him in Riverside County

A Sacramento man died Sunday night in Southern California after a vehicle struck him while walking in Cathedral City, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Joseph Gonzalez-Lederer, 61, was injured in the collision that occurred about 7:40 p.m. in the westbound lane of East Palm Canyon Drive, according to a sheriff-coroner news release. Gonzalez-Lederer was pronounced dead several minutes later.

The Cathedral City Police Department was investigating the man’s death, which was reported as a vehicle hitting a pedestrian. Officers arrived at the scene and found Gonzalez-Lederer on the street in the westbound lane with major injuries, the Desert Sun reported. Medics from the Cathedral City Fire Department provided medical treatment at the scene, but Gonzalez-Lederer died from his injuries.

KESQ Channel 3 reported on Monday that Gonzalez-Lederer’s death remained under investigation, and it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the traffic collision.

The Police Department has not released the name of the driver involved or a description of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian, according to the news reports.
