Update: CHP arrests driver after Arden Arcade hit-and-run kills pedestrian
California Highway Patrol officers arrested a Carmichael man suspected in a high-speed hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian Tuesday night in the Arden Arcade area, and say that he faces additional charges for falsely reporting to law enforcement that his vehicle was stolen.
The suspect vehicle, a dark-colored Infiniti G35X, was traveling at a high rate of speed on eastbound Marconi Avenue near Becerra Way around 9:45 p.m. when it struck a man walking near the shoulder area, CHP North Sacramento spokesman Officer A.J. McTaggart said.
The victim, a 59-year-old Sacramento man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a CHP news release.
The driver fled the scene but was later located and apprehended, McTaggart said.
The CHP in a news release identified the suspect as Alcier Frances Albert, 27, of Carmichael.
Albert allegedly called the CHP’s Sacramento-area dispatch center to report his vehicle stolen shortly after the crash, according to the news release.
Officers located the suspect vehicle — identified in part using painted vehicle parts left at the scene — near El Camino Avenue and Bridle Path Lane, less than 2 miles from the scene of the crash, authorities said.
“Officers then responded to Albert’s residence in order to inquire about the stolen vehicle report and investigate the hit-and-run crash,” the news release continued. “Upon arrival at the residence, officers located evidence indicating Albert was the driver at the time of the collision and subsequently placed him under arrest.”
The nature of the evidence located at the suspect’s residence was not immediately clear.
Albert was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges including gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run causing bodily injury or death, submitting a false police report and delaying or obstructing a peace officer, according to the CHP news release.
The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
