Woodland man driving lawn mower dies after vehicle hits him in Yolo County, CHP says

A man died Thursday afternoon when a vehicle struck the lawn mower he was driving in an apparent rear-end crash along a Yolo County rural road just west of Woodland, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Genaro Gonzalez, 58, of Woodland was the man driving the lawn mower who suffered fatal injuries in Thursday’s crash, according to the Yolo County Coroner’s Office.

The crash occurred about 3:10 p.m. on County Road 97, just south of Highway 16. Gonzalez was driving a Walker lawn mower northbound on County Road 97, the CHP Woodland Area Office announced in a news release Friday.

A 34-year-old Woodland woman was driving a 2003 Nissan north on the same road at an unknown speed, the CHP said. She was unable to stop or slow down, for an unknown reason, before the Nissan hit the man riding the lawn mower, according to the news release.

The CHP said Gonzalez was ejected from the lawn mower. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman driving the Nissan suffered minor injuries in the crash, and she was treated by medics at the scene and released by the CHP, according to the news release. The CHP did not release her name.

CHP investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. Authorities closed the rural road for about four hours, from Highway 16 to County Road 24, as CHP officers investigated at the scene.
