Update: Yuba sergeant released from hospital. Suspect faces attempted murder charge
A Yuba County sheriff’s sergeant was hospitalized Thursday after a chase ended with a struggle with a suspect in a flooded ditch, where the sergeant was held underwater.
The sergeant, who was not identified but described as a department veteran of 18 years, was released from the hospital Thursday night and is recovering at home, sheriff’s officials said in a Friday morning update.
The suspect, later identified as Thomas Giboney, 30, of Linda faces multiple charges including attempted murder of a peace officer, assault on a peace officer and felony evading police, according to a news release from the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department.
Giboney was booked into the Yuba County jail, with bail set at $1,125,000.
Shortly before 1 p.m., a sheriff’s patrol deputy tried to pull over Giboney on a traffic stop. Sheriff’s officials said Giboney, who was riding a motorcycle, failed to stop and headed east on North Beale Road from Hammonton-Smartsville Road in Linda.
A pursuit ensued and ended about a mile down the road on Alberta Avenue, where Giboney crashed the motorcycle.
Deputies tried to detain Giboney, who became combative and pulled the sheriff’s sergeant into the flooded ditch, where Giboney assaulted and held the sergeant underwater, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The other deputies rescued the sergeant and took Giboney into custody, according to the sheriff’s news release.
As of 4 p.m. Thursday, the sheriff’s sergeant remained at the hospital receiving treatment for minor injuries, including water aspiration, sheriff’s officials said.
Giboney also was taken to a hospital after suffering minor injuries, deputies said, before being booked into jail.
