South Sacramento vehicle chase ends with discovery of loaded gun magazine, police say
A man was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully possessing a gun magazine loaded with bullets after he drove away from an attempted traffic stop and led officers in a vehicle pursuit in south Sacramento, police said.
The circumstances that led to the arrest began about 5:40 p.m. Sunday near Bamford and Grandstaff drives, south of Mack Road and just east of Center Parkway. Officers tried to pull over the vehicle for an enforcement stop, but the driver failed to stop, said Officer Karl Chan, a Sacramento Police Department spokesman.
The vehicle pursuit ensued. Chan said officers lost sight of the vehicle in the area of Center Parkway and South Parkway.
The officers eventually found the suspect’s vehicle unoccupied and parked at a home in the 7300 block of Arleta Court.
Chan said officers detained a suspect at the home after determining he was in possession of a loaded firearm magazine. He said the suspect was prohibited from carrying ammunition, and he was arrested.
ABC10 reported police arrested arrested Curtis Smith, 61, on suspicion of possessing ammunition.
Sacramento County Jail records indicate Smith remained in custody Monday afternoon on charges of being a felon in possession of ammunition, unlawfully possessing ammunition and evading police in a reckless manner. He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
