Lincoln police arrest high school student accused of resisting officers during lockdown

A 16-year-old Lincoln High School student was arrested on suspicion of resisting police and being drunk in public Thursday as officers searched the campus for a reported gun but found no weapons.

Lincoln High was placed on lockdown Thursday as officers investigated and searched the Placer County campus where students saw what appeared to be a gun.

About 11:20 a.m., school staff contacted a police resource officer to report a student in possession of a gun on campus, according to a news release from the Lincoln Police Department. The officer, assigned to the school full-time, called for additional police officers to respond to the school cafeteria.

The officers were directed to a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table while school staff initiated a campus lockdown.

Police said the officers contacted those at the table and directed them to keep their hands in plain sight “due to the seriousness of the reported incident and for the safety of numerous students in the cafeteria.”

One of the students, the 16-year-old boy, refused to follow the officer’s commands and concealed his hands, according to the Police Department. Police said the officers pulled out the student’s hands, at which point the student “resisted and pulled away from officers.”

“To gain control of the student, officers pulled the student to the ground and placed him in handcuffs,” police officials wrote in the news release.

Officers searched the detained student, and he did not have a gun or weapons, police said. The police resource officer conducted a series of field sobriety tests which determined the student showed signs of alcohol intoxication, according to the news release.

Police later learned that other students and school staff saw the detained student lifting his shirt and making motions to his waistband before officers arrived in the cafeteria. Police said the students and school staff took the detained student’s gestures to indicate he had a gun.

Officers searched the campus and cafeteria with a drone and with a police K-9 trained to look for guns, but found no weapons in the area. Shortly before 2 p.m., police announced that the school lockdown had been lifted.

The detained student was later booked at Placer County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of public Intoxication and resisting a peace officer, both misdemeanor charges.

“Events of this nature are incredibly stressful for students, school staff and parents,” police officials wrote in the news release. “They evolve rapidly and are filled with uncertainty. The Lincoln Police Department strives to safely, quickly and confidently resolve them with no injuries to students and with minimal disruption to school functions.”

The Lincoln High lockdown occurred a day after police arrested a student at nearby Twelve Bridges High School who was suspected of posting an Instagram video that claimed a shooting would take place. The 16-year-old did not have any guns or weapons in his possession when he was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of making criminal threats, Lincoln police said.
