Officers increased patrols in an Elk Grove neighborhood after an elderly woman was assaulted at her home and robbed at knifepoint in a carjacking earlier this week.

Sacramento police officers found the woman’s stolen vehicle and arrested a man suspected of attacking and robbing the 86-year-old woman, according to the Elk Grove Police Department.

Markee Pettaway McDowell, 23, was arrested on suspicion of carjacking, robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse, police said. On Wednesday afternoon, McDowell remained in custody at the Sacramento County Jail. He also was being held without bail on an arrest warrant from the Reno Police Department, according to jail records.

The carjacking occurred Monday evening in the Glenbrooke Community. The woman had returned home and was getting her mail when a man approached her from behind.

Police said the man pulled out a knife and demanded the woman’s car keys. The man then took the car keys and hit the woman, knocking her to the ground, according to the Police Department.

The suspect drove away in the woman’s car. Officers arrived, offered the woman help and searched the surrounding area for the suspect and her stolen vehicle. The Police Department notified neighboring police agencies about the carjacking.

Later on Monday night, Sacramento Police Department officers spotted the woman’s car occupied by two people in the south Sacramento area. Elk Grove police said the officers arrested a man, later identified as McDowell, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of the woman’s vehicle.

Elk Grove police detectives later determined McDowell was the same suspect who attacked the elderly woman at her home, police said. The Police Department was increasing patrols in the Glenbrooke Community for the time being.
