Pilot seriously injured after small plane crashes on top of Auburn home
A pilot was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when a small plane crashed onto a home in Auburn, authorities in Placer County said.
Deputies were at the scene of the plane crash near Miracle Drive, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday on social media.
About 3 p.m. Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting “suspicious circumstances” in the 3000 block of Miracle Drive, just west of Bell Road near Auburn Municipal Airport. Sheriff’s officials said deputies arrived and found the plane had crashed on top of a home.
Residents who were inside the home at the time were not injured, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Medics from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection provided medical aid to the plane’s pilot before being taken to a hospital.
The plane reportedly took down some power lines in the moments before it crashed onto the home, said Capt. Sam Layton of the Cal Fire Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit. He said the plane’s pilot suffered major injuries and was hospitalized.
Only the pilot was injured in the plane crash; there were no reported injuries on the ground, Layton said. It was unclear the extent of damage at the home, and building inspectors were on their way to the scene, he said.
Donnell Evans, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, confirmed the crash occurred about 3 p.m., only the pilot was on board the single-engine Cessna 172 plane, and there were no injuries reported on the ground.
The FAA and National Transportation and Safety Board will investigate the plane crash. The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide any further updates.
Sheriff’s officials said deputies were providing security at the scene until the FAA and NTSB arrived to investigate the crash.
