CHP officer shoots driver after chase through rural Northern California
A California Highway Patrol officer shot a driver after a chase Sunday morning through Butte and Yuba counties, authorities said.
A 44-year-old Oroville man was taken to a hospital with major injuries after an exchange of gunfire with the officer, the CHP Oroville office said in a news release.
The CHP Oroville office said evidence was collected at the scene “indicating the driver fired shots at the involved officer.” The officer was not injured, authorities wrote.
The incident started near Oroville shortly before 9 a.m. when a CHP officer attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding. The driver did not pull over, and “a pursuit ensued” along Butte and Yuba county roads, CHP officials wrote.
“During the pursuit, the driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a power pole causing his vehicle to become disabled,” the news release said.
The shooting occurred immediately after the crash, CHP officials wrote, and the driver was transported to a hospital for treatment for injuries described as “major.” It was not immediately clear whether the major injuries were from the shooting, the vehicle crash or both.
CHP and the Yuba County District Attorney’s Office are investigating.
