Sacramento man arrested in shooting death of woman found in North Highlands home
Detectives on Tuesday arrested a Sacramento man on suspicion of homicide in the shooting death of a woman found at a North Highlands home last week.
Low Paul Lueras ,40, was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Mandalaina Martinez, 38, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday in a news release. Along with the homicide charge, Lueras also faces a charge of being a felon in possession of a gun.
Lueras also faces a charge of violating probation in a domestic violence conviction from last year. On May 6, Lueras pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of committing corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, according to Sacramento Superior Court records.
In November 2020, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office initially filed charges against Lueras for felony corporal injury, felony criminal threats and brandishing a deadly weapon (a baseball bat) in the Nov. 18, 2020, domestic violence incident. But those charges were dismissed in favor of the no contest plea on the misdemeanor charge, according to court records.
Lueras received an 180-day sentence and three years of probation. Court records show Luera failed to appear in court Oct. 29 to show proof he had enrolled in and completed a batterer’s treatment program.
The victim in the domestic violence case was identified as “Eunice Doe” in the filed criminal complaint. She had a dating relationship with Lueras, according to the complaint.
The fatal shooting was reported shortly after 1 a.m. Jan. 14 at the home in the 4800 block of Pasarobles Drive, just east of Pasadena Avenue and north of Auburn Boulevard. Sheriff’s officials said a resident called authorities to report someone had been shot and the shooter left the home on foot.
Deputies arrived and found Martinez inside the home. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Medics from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District pronounced Martinez dead at the scene.
Detectives tracked down and arrested Lueras, who was booked Tuesday evening at the Sacramento County Jail. He remained in custody Wednesday and was being held without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
