CHP explosives team called to remove suspicious box found near California Treasury

Police tape at crime scene

A California Highway Patrol bomb squad on Monday morning was called to the state Treasury building in downtown Sacramento to remove a suspicious package that didn’t have explosives or anything else inside.

The suspicious-looking cardboard box was found about 7:15 a.m. near the Treasury building at 915 Capitol Mall, near 10th and L Streets, according to a CHP news release. The box had been placed against an exterior wall near a loading dock.

The Treasury building is across the street from California state Capitol, where a man was arrested last week after reportedly throwing weights at the building and breaking windows.

The CHP’s Hazardous Device Detail was called to inspect the box and remove it. The CHP said the Treasury building was evacuated as a precaution while the hazardous device team used a robot to remove the package. Pedestrian traffic near the building also was blocked.

Officer John Ortega, a spokesman for the CHP’s Capitol Protection Section, said the hazardous device team found it was simply an empty cardboard box.
