14-year-old boy critically injured in hit-and-run in Sacramento Vineyard neighborhood
A 14-year-old boy was seriously injured Friday after a vehicle struck him near a park trail in a reported hit-and-run just west of Elk Grove Florin Road in the Vineyard neighborhood, authorities said.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District confirmed the collision was reported shortly after 12:30 p.m., and the injured boy was hospitalized and listed in critical condition Friday afternoon.
The teen is a student in the Elk Grove Unified School District, and he was struck by the vehicle near the green belt just south of Brittany Park after his school day had ended, said Xanthi Soriano, school district spokeswoman.
The park is part of the Southgate Recreation and Park District. It was unclear whether the boy was walking, riding a bicycle or using some other type of transportation near the green belt when the vehicle struck him.
The boy was struck by the vehicle in a reported hit-and-run, said Officer Mark Leavitt, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol South Sacramento Area Office. He did not have any further information about the collision investigation.
Soriano said emergency crews and the school district’s safety and security teams responded to the incident and contacted the student’s family.
“District staff will work with school staff to provide any needed supports for the student’s family and will work closely with law enforcement as they investigate,” Soriano wrote in a news release. “Our thoughts are with our student and their family at this time.”
