Missing Oakland teen was found dead in midtown Sacramento apartment, Sacramento police say

A 16-year-old Oakland girl reported missing was found dead with a gunshot wound last week in a Midtown apartment in Sacramento.

Marcella Garcia died March 17 in one of the apartments in the building at 2110 L St., according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. The manner of her death was listed as undetermined.

KTVU, the Bay Area Fox affiliate, first reported the missing girl’s death Friday. A missing persons flier, which identified her as Marcella Bernal-Garcia, seeking information about her disappearance and circulated on social media indicated she went missing March 12, 2021, in Sacramento.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. March 17, officers were called to the building on L Street for a report of someone with a gunshot wound, the Sacramento Police Department said Friday. Officers arrived and found the girl with at least one gunshot wound.

Police said the officers attempted life-saving measures, but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers conducted an investigation and found a gun at the scene.

The Police Department’s Homicide Unit was investigating the fatality as a “death investigation,” police said. The department declined to give further details about the girl’s death, including whether foul play was suspected.
