A man is in custody following a wild pursuit Thursday — punctuated by a gun battle between the suspect and an officer — that led officers through Sacramento streets and Highway 50 before ending with an arrest in Folsom.

According to the Sacramento Police Department, the incident began as a traffic stop at 6:42 p.m. at the intersection of 44th Street and 14th Avenue in Central Oak Park. Officers had tried to pull over the motorist for driving recklessly in the area, police said in a news release, but the driver did not stop.

Once officers began pursuing the vehicle a few blocks south, police say the motorist jumped out of his vehicle and fired two rounds at officers, striking a patrol vehicle, at the intersection of 44th Street and 23rd Avenue in the unincorporated Fruitridge Manor neighborhood.

One of the officers returned fire, according to police. No one was wounded by the gunfire, but an officer suffered a minor injury during the exchange, police said.

The chase then continued north where the motorist took to eastbound Highway 50 to elude Sacramento police, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol. Law enforcement caught up to the vehicle, which had been abandoned, in Folsom, where authorities began a search near Prairie City Road.

Officers located and arrested the suspect, who was later identified as Jose Ricardo Borrego, 34, near the Iron Point Light Rail Station just after 9 p.m., according to Sacramento officers. Police said in a news release that Borrego was in possession of a handgun and two magazines of ammunition at the time of his arrest.

Borrego, who was booked Friday morning into Sacramento County Main Jail, faces several felony charges including attempted murder, assault with a firearm on an officer and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is ineligible for bail and will be arraigned Monday.

Sacramento Police will release video and audio associated with the incident within 30 days, in accordance with the city’s use-of-force policy. The incident is also being investigated by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office because the gunfight occurred in county jurisdiction, police said.
