Sacramento State’s Police Department says it is again noticing a rise in catalytic converter thefts from vehicles on campus.

In a news release, the department states that it is seeing higher ground-clearance vehicles and Hondas being targeted. A previous surge had been reported in September 2021.

While thefts have centered around Hornet Commons, parking lot 10, parking structure 5 and Folsom Hall, authorities say people should keep in mind that thefts can occur anywhere vehicles are parked.

The city of Sacramento and Sacramento County also have seen an increase in catalytic converter thefts, according to the news release. Thefts increase when the price of platinum and other scrap metal increases.

University police highlighted these tips to reduce the risk of being a victim:

Park in areas where your vehicle will be seen most easily by passers-by.

Park defensively. Park high-profile vehicles so they are surrounded by low ground-clearance vehicles. This may deter thieves by making it harder for them to access the most vulnerable targets.

If your catalytic converter is a bolt-on model, you can have the bolts welded shut and have extra metal welded to the exhaust system.

Install a catalytic converter protection device that will clamp around the converter.

Etch your converter with your vehicle’s license plate number in several different locations. This will help police track your property if it is stolen.

Anyone with specific information about possible crimes as well as victims of catalytic converter theft are asked to contact the Sacramento State Police Department at 916-278-6000.
