Deputies find Monterey Trail High School student with loaded gun on Elk Grove campus

Police tape at crime scene

Authorities on Wednesday found a Monterey Trail High School student with a loaded gun on the Elk Grove campus and confiscated the weapon, according to the school district.

Monterey Trail High officials received a report Wednesday that indicated a student was seen in possession of a gun on campus, said Xanthi Soriano, an Elk Grove Unified School District spokeswoman.

School officials then contacted the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office to investigate. Soriano said deputies and school safety and security staff identified and found the student and searched the student’s belongings.

Deputies confiscated a loaded firearm from the student. She said the gun had not been brandished on campus. School officials took “appropriate action” after the gun was found, Soriano said, but she didn’t indicate what specific punishment the student faces.

She said district officials informed the school’s community about the incident.

CBS 13 reported that a letter to parents from Monterey Trail principal Lara Ricks indicated the student brought a gun to school in a backpack, told another student about the gun and that student then told a parent.
