Bicyclist, 22, dies after hit-and-run last week in south Sacramento County

hit and run fatality

A bicyclist struck by a pickup truck in an alleged hit-and-run last week in Sacramento County’s Vineyard area has died of his injuries, according to the coroner’s office.

Two cyclists were riding in the northbound bike lane on Elk Grove Florin Road near Bridalsmith Drive shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday when one of them was struck by a four-door pickup truck, the California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office said in a news release.

The bicyclist suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital, the CHP said.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Monday morning confirmed the victim died Sunday at a hospital, and identified him as 22-year-old Johnathon Saelee.

The driver in the deadly hit-and-run incident remains sought by the CHP. Authorities described the suspect vehicle as a white work truck with a missing passenger-side mirror, believed to be a Ford pickup truck in a 2008 to 2016 model year.

The second bicyclist, who was with Saelee at the time of the crash and was not struck, remained at the scene and cooperated with CHP officers.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact CHP South Sacramento at 916-897-5600, or the CHP dispatch center at 916-861-1300.
