An armed suspect said to have been holding a hostage inside a home in Sacramento’s Fruitridge Manor neighborhood surrendered to law enforcement early Tuesday morning, following a nearly 18-hour standoff. The hostage was not injured, police said.

The Sacramento Police Department first announced in social media posts around 11:15 a.m. Monday that officers were attempting to contact a subject after reports of shots fired near 58th Street and Fruitridge Road around 10 a.m. Police by noon Monday said no injuries had been reported and that officers were establishing a perimeter around a residence on 58th Street.

Around 2:45 p.m., the Police Department said officers had spotted a person armed with a weapon inside the home, and that at least one other person was believed to be inside the home. About an hour after that, the department said officers believed the armed suspect was holding at least one hostage against their will inside the home.

After an extended standoff, police said the suspect and the hostage, both men, emerged from the home just before 3 a.m. and the suspect was taken into custody.

Police said the suspect and victim were known to each other, “but the exact relationship is still under investigation,” said police spokesman Officer Ryan Woo. The identity of the suspect was not disclosed.

“The victim is safe,” the Police Department wrote. “Reduced police presence will remain as detectives have responded to process the scene.”

SWAT teams, crisis negotiators and aerial drone officers were all dispatched to the scene Monday. Deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office also assisted overnight, the Police Department said.

Nearby West Campus High School, along with Mark Twain and Peter Burnett elementary schools were placed on precautionary lockdown Monday, Sacramento City Unified School District officials said.

Around 4:45 p.m., a district spokesman said students at the three schools had been sent home for the day. The campuses will be open as normal Tuesday.
