Latest: Armed standoff ends after nearly 18 hours with suspect’s surrender

Sacramento police officers on Monday were trying to speak to an armed suspect who may have fired a gun earlier and is believed to be holding a hostage inside a home near the Fruitridge Manor neighborhood.

Campus officials placed three nearby schools on lockdown as a precautionary measure for hours after a large number of police officers cordoned off the area in the residential neighborhood.

About 11:15 a.m., the Sacramento Police Department announced in social media posts that officers were in the area of 58th Street and Fruitridge Road. Police said the officers were trying to contact someone who may have fired a gun.

At 12:05 p.m., police said no injuries had been reported. Officers established a perimeter around the home on 58th Street, between 27th Avenue and Fruitridge.

A police SWAT team was at the scene, and crisis negotiators and aerial drone officers were called to assist, according to the Police Department.

About 2:45 p.m., police said that officers spotted one person armed with a weapon inside the home, and at least one other person was believed to be inside the home. About an hour later, the Police Department announced that officers believe the armed suspect was holding at least one other person against their will inside the home.

Police said crisis negotiators had established some communication with those inside the home and officers continued their efforts to bring about “a peaceful resolution to this incident.”

The Police Department urged residents to avoid the area and for motorists to choose alternate traffic routes. Police said this was preliminary information and promised to announce further updates.

West Campus High School, along with Mark Twain and Peter Burnett elementary schools were placed on lockdown “out of an abundance of caution” after school officials were notified of the heavy police presence in the area, said Al Goldberg, communications manager for Sacramento City Unified, in an email.

About 4:45 p.m., Goldberg announced that students at the three schools have been sent home for the day. School officials sent instructions to parents on where they could pick up their children.
