California police vehicle hit by alleged drunk driver while investigating another DUI
A suspected drunk driver struck a Placerville police vehicle Saturday along Highway 50 as officers were investigating an earlier DUI crash that resulted in the death of a Pollock Pines woman, the Placerville Police Department said.
The department in a statement earlier this week said 47-year-old Aaron Folmsbee of Cameron Park was arrested on suspicion of DUI and manslaughter. Police said a Jeep Cherokee driven by Folmsbee collided with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle around 6:45 p.m. that evening, killing a 60-year-old woman who was a passenger of the motorcycle and also seriously injuring the motorcyclist.
The Police Department in a Thursday news release revealed that as officers were responding to that deadly DUI, on Highway 50 near Broadway, another vehicle crashed into one of its patrol vehicles.
One officer was inside the vehicle and another was on the shoulder of Highway 50 near the patrol car, the news release said. Neither were injured.
Police arrested the driver in that incident, 45-year-old Elliot George Wingfield, on misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was booked into jail Saturday evening and has since been released, jail records show.
Folmsbee, arrested in the crash that killed Pollock Pines resident Lori Hooper, was released after posting bail, jail records also show.
The Placerville Police Department reminded drivers not to drive while under the influence, and also to use extra caution around emergency vehicles or tow trucks that are stopped on roadways.
