One man dead and another seriously wounded in Citrus Heights shootout, police say
One man is dead and another was critically wounded after they reportedly exchanged gunfire in a shootout Monday night at a Citrus Heights apartment complex, police said.
Shortly before 11 p.m., numerous people called 911 to report gunshots fired in the 6000 block of Birdcage Street, just south of Greenback Lane and west of Sunrise Boulevard.
Officers arrived and found a 20-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the walkway of the apartment complex, the Citrus Heights Police Department announced Tuesday in a news release. The wounded man was taken by ambulance to a hospital and listed in critical condition. His name has not been released.
The officers then found another 20-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds inside a nearby apartment who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday released the name of Jacob Steven Lopez of Citrus Heights, who died in the shooting.
Detectives investigating the homicide believe the shooting was not a random act of gun violence. The two men struck by gunfire likely knew each other, and preliminary information revealed both men appeared to be shooting at each other, according to the Police Department.
Officers closed the 6000 block of Birdcage Street for several hours overnight as detectives and crime scene investigators worked at the scene.
