A man accused of firing on officers is facing a slew of new charges from a separate shooting that took place hours before his encounter with Sacramento police.

Jose Borrego — who was arrested in April on suspicion of driving recklessly and shooting at officers when they attempted to make a traffic stop — is now charged with “violations related to a separate shooting that preceded the officer-involved shooting,” the department said in a news release Tuesday.

Police said Borrego allegedly fired at three occupied vehicles in the area of 65th Street and Jansen Drive about 2:30 a.m. April 14, the same day police say he ambushed them. The shooting resulted in non-life threatening injuries to one person, police said.

About 14 hours after the shooting on 65th Street, Borrego was spotted by police allegedly running a red light. When the vehicle failed to stop for police, a chase ensued.

Once officers began pursuing the vehicle a few blocks south, police say the motorist jumped out of his vehicle and fired two rounds at officers, striking a patrol vehicle with four officers inside, at the intersection of 44th Street and 23rd Avenue in the unincorporated Fruitridge Manor neighborhood.

The vehicle fled east on Highway 50 and was found abandoned in Folsom. Borrego was later taken into custody at the Natoma Light Rail Station.

Borrego remains in custody at the county’s Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center and is ineligible for bail.
