A Sacramento County jury convicted a man for bursting into an apartment and fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend four years ago, prosecutors said.

The jury on Friday found Keyshawn Wright guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting that killed Alex Smith, according to a news release from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. Wright also was convicted of being a felon in possession of a gun.

On Tuesday, Wright, 30, remained in custody at the Sacramento County Jail. His conviction includes an enhancement for using a gun in a homicide.

Prosecutors said Wright faces a maximum sentence of 70 years to life in prison. He’s scheduled to return to Sacramento Superior Court July 22 for his sentencing hearing.

The fatal shooting occurred Nov. 25, 2018. Prosecutors said Smith was dating a woman who was in a previous relationship with Wright, and one of Wright’s associates saw Smith and Wright’s ex-girlfriend arrive at her apartment.

Shortly after, Wright kicked in the apartment door and began to shoot at Smith, who was struck by gunfire in the chest, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Smith returned fire, prosecutors said, firing one shot that hit Wright in the forearm.

Authorities found Wright’s blood leading away from the apartment to the parking lot, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Wright arrived at the hospital minutes later. Prosecutors said Wright lied to authorities, saying he was shot at another location by an unknown person.
