CHP in Sacramento arrests teen in parking lot shooting next to California EDD building
California Highway Patrol officers arrested a 16-year-old boy and were looking for another teen in connection with a shooting in April that seriously wounded a man at a state Employment Development Department parking lot in Sacramento.
The shooting was reported to the Sacramento Police Department about 11:30 a.m. at 2901 50th Street in the parking lot adjacent to the California EDD building at 5007 Broadway, just west of Fairgrounds Drive. The CHP took over the shooting investigation since the crime occurred on state property.
Security at EDD heard gunshots from the parking lot and found a man who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his back, the CHP South Sacramento Area Office has said. No EDD employees were injured or involved in the shooting.
The CHP has said shooting victim, an 18-year-old Sacramento man, was taken by ambulance to a hospital in stable condition and was expected to survive his injuries. Witnesses told officers two suspects wearing black hooded-sweatshirts ran north from the EDD parking lot and left the area in a yellow 2000s-model Chevrolet Impala.
CHP investigators have worked over the past several weeks to identify the suspected shooter and his alleged accomplice.
On Tuesday, officers conducted an operation in which the alleged shooter, 16-year-old boy, was found and taken into custody without incident, according to a news release from the CHP South Sacramento Area Office. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and robbery, and he was booked at the Sacramento Youth Detention Facility.
The CHP also said an arrest warrant was issued for a second suspect, another 16-year-old boy, wanted in connection with the shooting at the EDD parking lot. The Sacramento Bee is not including the names of the two suspects because they are minors.
The vehicle believed to have been involved in the getaway, a gold 2000 Chevrolet Malibu, was found at a Sacramento home and seized as evidence.
Investigators asked anyone with additional information about this shooting can send an anonymous tip via email to chpvalleytip@chp.ca.gov.
