Man killed in shooting after reported robbery near Sacramento card room, police say
A man was shot dead Monday morning following a reported robbery at a Sacramento card room, police said.
Officers responded just after 6 a.m. to the 400 block of North 16th Street, which is the location of Capitol Casino in the city’s River District, the Sacramento Police Department said in a social media post just before 7 a.m.
The initial caller reported that the suspect was armed with a firearm, Police Department spokesman Officer Ryan Woo said.
A man at the scene who attempted to confront the suspect was shot by the suspect, Woo said. The suspect then fled and continued shooting while he fled, according to Woo.
Responding officers located and safely detained the suspect. Woo said the suspect, who has not been identified, was armed when taken into custody.
Sacramento Fire Department personnel responded and pronounced the gunshot victim dead at the scene, Woo said. Homicide detectives are investigating.
Woo said he could not confirm whether the man who confronted the robbery suspect was a security guard or a bystander. He said there are not believed to be any outstanding suspects in the shooting.
The casino has been the scene of other deadly shootings in recent years.
In July 2021, 33-year-old Renee Walker was shot and killed outside Capitol Casino. Police arrested a 36-year-old Rancho Cordova woman, Arviel Robertson, who was located later that month in Texas and extradited.
Nicholas Broadway, a 36-year-old Capitol staffer, was shot dead outside the card room in November 2016 — an apparent bystander struck by gunfire when a man involved in a brawl fired shots at a Sacramento police officer and security guards attempting to break up the fight.
Luis Alfonso Castillo, now 35, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after being convicted in 2020 of second-degree murder in Broadway’s death.
