Police arrested a DUI hit-and-run suspect Tuesday who is accused of striking and seriously injuring a 16-year-old girl earlier this year in Galt.

The incident happened March 14 on Ayers Lane, a residential street just off of Highway 99, where police responded to reports of a female victim down in the roadway, the Galt Police Department said in a news release.

Arriving officers determined that the teen had a “significant head injury,” and she was rushed to a hospital.

The Police Department in a March news release said the teen was struck shortly before 11 p.m. while walking her dog, and that she was on life support at a hospital. Police in that news release said the girl was found bleeding from her head at the scene.

Galt police in an update this week identified the girl as 16-year-old Angel Renteria of Galt, and said that she is continuing to recover.

The night of the crash, while officers and Cosumnes CSD Fire Department personnel were attending to the teen, a white Dodge Ram pickup truck “drove into the scene and collided with the back of a Galt PD K-9 patrol vehicle,” police wrote in Tuesday’s news release.

The California Highway Patrol responded to assist, and determined the driver of the Dodge, identified as 29-year-old Devin Calderon of Rancho Murieta, to be under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested that evening on DUI-related charges, police said.

Galt police then located evidence at the scene suggesting the vehicle that struck the pedestrian was also a white Dodge pickup truck.

The Police Department said that after an “extensive investigation,” investigators determined that the same vehicle that struck its patrol car had also hit the 16-year-old girl. The department said it received assistance from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office’s forensics lab, which aided with “extensive DNA work related to this case.”

Detectives obtained a warrant and arrested Calderon on Tuesday. She was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail downtown on felony charges of hit-and-run causing death or permanent serious injury, DUI and DUI causing injury or death, jail records show.

Calderon’s bail is set at $125,000, and she is due in court Thursday.
