Wrong-way driver on Highway 50 arrested for DUI after crash injures teen, police say
A suspected drunk driver who crashed into another vehicle while driving the wrong way on Highway 50 was arrested last week in Placerville, police said.
Officers responded around 12:30 a.m. Friday to reports of a 2004 Honda Civic traveling westbound in eastbound lanes of Highway 50 near Smith Flat Road, “at a high rate of speed,” the Placerville Police Department said in a Wednesday news release.
Minutes later, responding officers discovered a two-vehicle crash near Bedford Avenue.
The Honda driver, 36-year-old Anthony Estrada of Oakland, was taken to a hospital with injuries and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, the Police Department said.
A 15-year-old passenger in the other vehicle, an SUV, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
An open alcoholic beverage was found inside Estrada’s car, according to the news release.
Estrada was booked after release from the hospital into the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville on charges of DUI causing injuries, driving on the wrong side of a divided roadway and driving on a suspended license.
His bail was set at $110,000; he has since been released, jail records show.
