Police search for shooting suspect leads to vehicle chase and fatal crash in Sacramento
A search for a suspect in a West Sacramento shooting led detectives to a vehicle chase Thursday in south Sacramento that ended with a crash and the suspect’s death.
Detectives were looking for a suspect in a September shooting that wounded a victim in West Sacramento. The detectives had identified the suspect and obtained a felony arrest warrant. The West Sacramento Police Department at the time did not include the suspect’s name in a news release with updated information on the fatal crash.
About 9:45 a.m, West Sacramento police detectives spotted the suspect driving a vehicle near Hollyhurst Way and Valley Hi Drive in south Sacramento. The detectives tried to pull over the vehicle.
Police said the suspect initially stopped the vehicle but drove off, leading the detectives in a vehicle pursuit. The suspect was involved in a single-vehicle crash a short time later on Consumes River Boulevard, just east of Franklin Boulevard, according to the Police Department.
The suspect, who was the only person in the vehicle and was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police officials did not release any further details about the crash.
Name released, investigation continues
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Friday identified 36-year-old DeAngelo Aron McCoy as the man who died in Thursday’s crash. His city of residence was not available.
The fatal crash was being investigated by the Sacramento Police Department Major Collision Investigation Unit. The West Sacramento Police Department Professional Standards Unit and the West Sacramento Police Department Investigations Division will be investigating the events that led to the deadly crash.
The crash caused traffic delays in the Valley Hi/North Laguna neighborhood, the Sacramento Police Department announced at 10:45 a.m. Thursday in social media posts. Sacramento police officers were not involved in the vehicle chase.
As authorities worked at the crash scene, traffic and Sacramento Regional Transit trains were stalled in the area. Police asked drivers to use other routes and avoid the area.
