Driver killed after RV flips into ditch near Brannan Island in the Delta, the CHP says

Roadway fatality

A driver was killed after his RV flipped into a ditch Monday in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta area, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

The vehicle drove off the road along westbound Highway 12 at Jackson Slough Road just after 8 a.m., said Officer Mark Leavitt, a spokesman for the CHP’s South Sacramento office. Leavitt confirmed the driver was the vehicle’s sole occupant.

The crash occurred several yards from the River Delta Fire Protection District station, and when crews arrived they found the driver dead. The wreck was about 4 miles southeast of Rio Vista.

What caused the RV to careen into the embankment remains under investigation, Leavitt said.

The driver was identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Romeo Rones, 64, of Pittsburg.
