21-year-old man identified as victim in Sacramento homicide at Greenhaven neighborhood bar

Police tape at crime scene

Officers on Thursday afternoon were investigating a shooting that left a man dead in Sacramento’s Greenhaven neighborhood just west of Interstate 5.

The shooting was reported shortly before 1 p.m. in the 6100 block of Riverside Drive near the Trap bar at the intersection of 43rd Avenue. Before officers arrived at the scene, dispatchers were told that the victim was being taken to a hospital in a private vehicle, said Officer Cody Tapley, a spokesman for the Sacramento Police Department.

The officers arrived at the shooting scene and began their investigation. The Police Department confirmed that the shooting did not occur at or involve the adjacent Brookfield School.

Tapley said authorities later found the victim, a 21-year-old man, who suffered at least one gunshot wound at a hospital. He said the wounded man was later pronounced dead.

Benjamin Markus Sapp of Sacramento was the man killed in Thursday’s shooting, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

The fatal shooting occurred outside the bar, according to a statement from the family-owned business posted on the Trap bar’s Facebook page.

“It’s essential to clarify that the incident wasn’t related to the bar or its patrons; it merely unfolded on our premises,” Mariah Lukenbill, one of the owners wrote in the Trap’s Facebook post. “We are devastated by the events and want to emphasize our commitment to the safety of this community, which remains our top priority.”

Police said late Thursday that the investigation remains ongoing but there was no word of suspects or a motive for the slaying.

Investigators asked anyone with information about this fatal shooting to call officers at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the P3 Tips website and app.
