Bicyclist dies after alleged hit-and-run in Sacramento. Suspected driver arrested, police say
Sacramento police arrested a man as a suspect in a deadly hit-and-run in which a vehicle struck a woman riding a bicycle Tuesday morning in the Curtis Park neighborhood.
The fatal hit-and-run traffic collision was reported about 7:45 a.m. in the area of 21st and X streets, just south of Highway 50, police said.
Officers arrived at the scene and found a 55-year-old woman who had suffered significant injuries, the Sacramento Police Department announced Wednesday in a news release.
The vehicle left the area before officers arrived. The injured bicyclist was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
Detectives on Wednesday were notified the woman had died from her injuries at the hospital, according to the news release. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release her name after her family has been notified.
About 9 a.m. Wednesday, patrol officers and detectives found the suspect vehicle in the area of 19th Street and Broadway, police said. The vehicle was spotted about two blocks away from where the fatal hit-and-run occurred the previous day.
Because of the severity of the woman’s injuries, detectives from the Police Department’s major collision investigations unit took over the investigation. Police said the detectives and crime scene investigators canvassed the area for evidence, witnesses and additional information.
Police pulled over the vehicle and arrested the driver, a 63-year-old Sacramento man.
The suspect was booked Wednesday afternoon at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He faces felony charges of hit-and-run resulting in death and violating probation, along with a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, jail records show.
He was being held in custody without bail, and his arraignment in Sacramento Superior Court had not yet been scheduled as of early Wednesday afternoon.
