CHP helicopter camera captures man leaping roof to roof of Sacramento homes. See the video
A night-vision camera on a California Highway Patrol helicopter captured a man leaping from roof to roof of Sacramento homes before he got stuck in a tree and had to be rescued.
CHP Valley Division Air Operations on Friday released several details of the incident and shared a video of the man leaping across the rooftops while apparently trying to evade police.
About 1:30 a.m. on Monday, the officers in the CHP helicopter were asked to assist police officers in a Sacramento residential neighborhood.
The CHP said the Sacramento Police Department asked for aerial help after the man was spotted in a home’s backyard. The CHP helicopter arrived and its camera captured the man leaping from house to house.
The man continued to leap across rooftops for nearly an hour, the CHP said, before he got stuck in a tree and had to be rescued by firefighters.
Officers had responded to reports of someone jumping fences into backyards at homes in the area of the 1600 block of Vallarta Circle, just west of Truxel Road and north of San Juan Road in the South Natomas neighborhood.
The officers arrived at the scene, and the man ran from them and climbed on top of a roof before jumping from house to house, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Police said the officers eventually contained the man, who came down and was detained.
The man told officers that people were chasing him, but the officers did not find anyone else on the rooftops. Police said the man was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.
The CHP’s edited one minute, four second video shows the man hiding behind one chimney moments before leaping onto another roof.
At another point, the video shows the man leaping onto the rooftop of one home only to find what appeared to be police officers waiting on that roof. The man quickly turned around and leaped onto the roof he had just jumped off from and ran across that rooftop.
Meanwhile, the video shows other officers on the ground trying to keep up with the evading man as he leaped from roof to roof.
