Man pleads guilty to murder in DUI crash that killed a Northern California football coach
A man accepted a plea deal last week and pleaded guilty to murder and driving intoxicated during a hit-and-run collision that killed a Lindhurst assistant football coach, according to the Yuba County District Attorney’s Office.
Larry Lee Anderson Jr., 50, pleaded guilty Friday to murder, hit and run and driving under the influence. The DUI charge included a sentence enhancement of inflicting great bodily injury on a person, according to court records.
Anderson, a Plumas Lake resident, was driving south on Feather River Boulevard on Feb. 26 when he attempted to overtake a vehicle in front of him. He drove in between two cars at more than 100 mph, clipping one vehicle and then careening into the back of the victim’s car, prosecutors said.
The victim’s car, driven by Lindhurst High School assistant football coach Shane Bunn, launched into an irrigation canal. Prosecutors said Bunn died instantly after crashing.
Anderson swerved right, hitting another vehicle, before crashing to an orchard. He then fled from the vehicle, prosecutors said.
Law enforcement officers fanned out across the area and found Anderson hiding hours later. Six hours after the collision, Anderson had a blood alcohol level of 0.16, prosecutors said.
Investigators said they found evidence showing Anderson picked up hard liquor from three different stores hours before the collision. He also has three prior DUI convictions, prosecutors said.
Anderson is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 11 in Yuba Superior Court. He faces a sentence of 15 years to life.
Bunn was survived by his wife Lindsay, daughter Marley and a large extended family, according to a GoFundMe created for him.
“He was such a great husband, father, friend, brother, son and coach to many,” the GoFundMe reads, in part. “The memories he and his loved ones have created will last a lifetime.”
