Shooting kills one man, wounds another in retail center parking lot near Sacramento State
One man was killed and another man was wounded Monday evening when gunshots rang out in the parking lot of a small retail center not far from the Sacramento State campus.
The shooting was reported shortly after 5 p.m. in the 7800 block of La Riviera Drive, between Howe Avenue and College Town Drive, said Officer Cody Tapley, a spokesman for the Sacramento Police Department.
Several fast food restaurants are located in the retail center, along with a sports bar, a hair salon, a 7-Eleven convenience store and a Chevron gas station in the College Town neighborhood a few blocks east of the campus.
Officers arrived at the shooting scene and found a man suffering from a life threatening gunshot wound. Tapley said officers began performing lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s name and age after his family has been notified.
Police said the officers found another man wounded by gunfire down the street. He was suffering from a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening and was taken by ambulance to a hospital. On Tuesday, police said the wounded man was listed in stable condition.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators took over the investigation to collect evidence, canvass the area and question any witnesses. The circumstances of what led up to the deadly shooting remained under investigation.
Tapley said on Monday night that officers at the scene found and detained two people considered “persons of interest” who will be questioned by detectives.
On Tuesday, the Police Department announced that other police officers found a suspect leaving the scene, who was detained and later questioned by detectives. Police said the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Austin Jay Greer of Plumas Lake, was arrested on suspicion of homicide.
Greer was booked early Tuesday at the Sacramento County Jail, where he was being held without bail. He is scheduled to appear for his arraignment hearing Wednesday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court.
It’s unclear what happened to the other detained person of interest; police as of midday Tuesday had not announced any additional arrests in connection to the shooting.
Investigators asked any witnesses with information about this fatal shooting to call the Police Department at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
