Man convicted of murder after he stole weapons, gunned down North Highlands homeowner
A Sacramento Superior Court jury found a man guilty of first-degree murder for the shooting death of a North Highlands resident two years ago as the burglar fled with guns stolen from the man’s backyard shed, prosecutors said.
Along with the murder charge, the jury on Thursday also found Kailin Deshai Harris, 29, guilty of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday in a news release.
Authorities said Gennadiy Ivanovich Mironov, 62, was hit by gunfire in the Jan. 17, 2022, shooting at his home on Greenlawn Way in North Highlands. Mironov died hours later at a hospital.
Prosecutors said Harris was tampering with vehicles near Mironov’s home and stealing items from them before Harris went into Mironov’s backyard about 5:30 a.m. that morning, entered a shed and stole multiple guns.
An alert from a Ring-brand camera woke up Mironov, who confronted Harris as the defendant fled with the stolen guns, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Harris then shot Mironov twice before fleeing the home, prosecutors said.
Harris was arrested a week later after deputies served a warrant at a North Sacramento home. Since then, Harris has remained in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail.
Prosecutors said Harris could face a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. A sentencing hearing for Harris is scheduled for Sept. 26.
