Woman dies after vehicle crashes into bridge’s concrete post in Auburn, CHP says

Roadway fatality

A woman died after she lost control of her vehicle late Wednesday and struck the concrete post of a street bridge near Interstate 80 in Auburn, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The single-vehicle crash was initially reported about 11:50 p.m. to the CHP as an incident involving a semi-truck and a pedestrian in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Highway 49. But neither a semi-truck or a pedestrian were involved in the crash, the CHP said.

Officers arrived at the scene and learned the woman was driving a silver Acura MDX, and she lost control of her vehicle for unknown reasons, the CHP Auburn office announced Thursday morning in a news release.

The CHP said the Acura struck the center divider and a concrete post of the Nevada Street bridge. The CHP also said the Acura’s driver, who was not wearing her seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle as the Acura continued to move along the center divider for several hundred feet.

“While mechanical failure is not suspected, it is still unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in this incident,” the CHP said in the news release. “The CHP is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.”

The Placer County Coroner’s Office was expected to release the name of the motorist after her family was notified.

Investigators asked anyone with additional information about this deadly crash to call the CHP’s Valley Division offices at 916-663-3344.
