Police tape at crime scene

A man was killed in a shootout late Tuesday with sheriff’s deputies near Marysville after leading them on a brief chase.

The deadly events unfolded in Browns Valley about 14 miles northeast of Marysville. A Yuba County sheriff’s deputy tried to stop the driver of a truck on Marysville Road near Shadowbrook Trail about 10:25 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Sheriff’s Office. It was not immediately known why deputies attempted to stop the man.

The driver did not stop and a 30-minute chase ended when the truck broke down on Highway 20 between Hallwood and Walnut avenues in the community of Hallwood, just northeast of Marysville, sheriff’s officials said. Yuba City Police Department officers joined the chase.

Deputies said the man opened fire from his truck just before 11 p.m., trading gunfire with deputies. Deputies pronounced the man dead at the scene. The shooting and investigation into the incident shut down Highway 20 in Yuba County in both directions for hours.

No deputies were hurt in the fatal shooting, authorities said. The man’s name was not released pending notification of family members.

Highway 20 reopened to traffic at 11:15 a.m., said California Highway Patrol officials.
