Man sentenced to life in prison for murder of North Highlands resident during home burglary
A Sacramento Superior Court judge sentenced a man to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the fatal shooting of a North Highlands resident two years ago as the burglar fled with guns stolen from the resident’s backyard shed, prosecutors said.
A jury in August found Kailin Deshai Harris, 29, guilty of first-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm in the Jan. 17, 2022, shooting that killed 62-year-old Gennadiy Ivanovich Mironov at his home.
Judge Michael Sweet sentenced Harris to life in prison on Sept. 26, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday in a news release. Harris’ conviction included a special circumstance enhancement of committing murder during a burglary, along with an enhancement for using a gun causing death.
Prosecutors said Harris was tampering with vehicles near Mironov’s home on Greenlawn Way and stealing items from the vehicles before he went into Mironov’s backyard about 5:30 a.m. that morning, entered a shed and stole multiple guns.
An alert from a Ring-brand camera woke up Mironov, who confronted Harris as he fled with the stolen guns, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Harris then shot Mironov twice before fleeing the home, prosecutors said. Mironov died hours later at a hospital.
Harris was arrested a week later after deputies served a warrant at a North Sacramento home. Harris was held in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail through the completion of his trial.
On Tuesday, Harris was serving his life sentence at North Kern State Prison in Delano.
