A Sacramento man pleaded not guilty in federal court on Tuesday to charges of robbing two postal carriers at gunpoint and stealing the keys to mailboxes before fleeing on a bicycle.

William Carl Jackson, 36, will remain in custody pending his trial, Magistrate Judge Jeremy D. Peterson ruled.

Jackson was indicted by the federal grand jury last month on four counts of robbery, assault and illegal possession of mail keys in the two incidents in the city of Sacramento last July, documents unsealed Monday show.

Jackson was arrested by Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies on Nov. 11, documents filed in Sacramento federal court said. At the time of his arrest, he was in a car with another person, where deputies also found a printer and counterfeit $2, $5, $10, $20 and $100 bills. A fake pistol was also in the car, according to prosecutors.

Jackson was on probation at the time, prosecutors said, but had not checked in with authorities since June.

If convicted, Jackson could face a sentence of 25 years in prison for each robbery count, and 10 years for each count of possessing a mail key, along with a possible fine.

The indictment did not specify whether Jackson had illegally accessed mail.

Jackson, who has been held in the Sacramento County Main Jail since his arrest, appeared in court on Tuesday and entered his plea before Peterson’s ruling. Prosecutors told the court in filings they consider Jackson a flight risk.

Jackson will return to federal court Jan. 10.
