After failing to break into one south Sacramento home, a 40-year-old man fled on foot Friday to a nearby house, crashed a stolen vehicle through the garage door and led local law enforcement on a nearly hourlong chase before being taken into custody, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

The man was arrested on suspicion of multiple felonies Friday and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail, the Sheriff’s Office reported on X, and he is being held on $100,000 bail. A court hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, the post stated..

The suspect around 3 p.m. “approached a home on the 7200 block of Chandler Drive and began breaking the windows to gain entry,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “The homeowner, who was home with his family, yelled at the intruder several times to stop,” but the suspect “refused, continuing to try to break windows and get inside.”

Fearing for his family’s safety, the homeowner fired a gun at the man from inside the residence and struck his hand, according to the sheriff’s report. The suspect then went to a home nearby and was able to gain entry.

“Fortunately, no one was home,” the Sheriff’s report stated. The suspect then “found the keys to a car parked in the garage and fled through the closed garage door in the vehicle, causing significant damage.”

Responding to a call about the crimes, sheriff’s deputies chased the man in the stolen vehicle and ultimately used tack strips and other measures to stop the vehicle he was driving near Highway 99 and Arno Road, south of Elk Grove, according to the agency’s post.

The Sheriff’s Office said that deputies took the suspect to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and medically cleared for booking.
