1970s muscle car may have been involved in deadly Highway 99 hit-and-run last May, CHP says

Pedestrian fatality

The California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office released a new vehicle description Friday as it looks for information that could help solve a deadly hit-and-run crash that took place last spring on Highway 99.

CHP officials in a Friday news release asked the public for information regarding vehicles that fled the scene following a fatal crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian May 4 on the southbound lanes of Highway 99 north of Fruitridge Road.

According to the news release, authorities believe a car involved was an older green “muscle car” that may be a 1970s Oldsmobile Cutlass or similar vehicle. The victim’s white Hyundai Santa Fe SUV was left at the scene, while there were also reports of “at least a few other vehicles” on the scene, according to the news release.

The CHP last May reported three other cars being involved: a 2013 Honda driven by a 32-year-old driver, a 2009 Toyota driven by a 22-year-old man from Elk Grove and a 2013 Toyota driven by a 64-year-old man from Grass Valley.

The crash happened at roughly 4:16 a.m. The pedestrian who died was 25-year-old Brandon Nicholas Metz of Sacramento. Metz, who played football for Sacramento City College, was helping someone on the side of the road, according to a GoFundMe page created last year to help with his funeral costs.

Officers are looking for information about this incident and any witnesses to Metz walking on Highway 99 before the incident. Anyone with information is being encouraged to contact CHP South Sacramento at 916-897-5600 and ask to speak to Officer Moore.
