Man shot, killed after ‘violent confrontation’ with Northern California deputies, sheriff says
Northern California authorities are investigating a shooting in which two deputies opened fire, killing a man in Shasta County on New Year’s Day.
Officers responded to a call at 6:17 p.m. Wednesday that a man was threatening to blow up a vehicle and harm himself near the 12000 block of Bob’s Mountain Road in a rural area north of Redding, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday in a news release.
Shasta County deputies responded to a call that the man, identified as 52-year-old William Clark Littlefield, was under the influence of narcotics and was making threats. When the deputies arrived, they contacted both of the man’s parents, sheriff’s officials stated.
The Sheriff’s Office said Littlefield then “forced a violent confrontation,” which prompted two sheriff’s deputies to discharge their weapons, according to the news release.
Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said deputies provided medical aid following the shooting but that Littlefield was later pronounced dead by medical staff.
The two deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave as is standard for officer-involved shootings, the Sheriff’s Office stated.
No deputies were hurt in the incident, authorities said.
