An Oakland man was arrested this week at Sky River Casino in Elk Grove in connection with the deadly shooting of his wife nearly two years ago, state law enforcement officials said.

The California Highway Patrol Golden Gate Division announced Friday that officers arrested Nathanuel McCowan, 49, Thursday night after the Alameda Super Court formally charged him with murder and issued an arrest warrant earlier in the day. The arrest capped an investigation that lasted more than 22 months.

The CHP division’s special investigations unit worked with officers from CHP South Sacramento, CHP Stockton and the Elk Grove Police Department to arrest McCowan without incident at roughly 11:50 p.m. at the popular Sacramento-area tribal casino.

“I want to thank our incredible investigative team for their dedication and relentless pursuit of justice for the victim,” Don Goodbrand, the CHP Golden Gate Division’s chief, said in a statement. “This arrest is a great example of the teamwork necessary between law enforcement and prosecutors to hold suspects to answer for their crimes.”

Laketha McCowan was pronounced dead at the scene after officers responded to a report of an assault in progress at roughly 1:30 a.m. Feb. 26, 2023, on the Edwards Avenue offramp from eastbound Interstate 580, in Oakland. Officers found Laketha McCowan on the shoulder of the ramp with a gunshot wound. Her husband Nathanuel McCowan was later considered a prime suspect by investigators, the CHP said.

McCowan was transported to Alameda County and was booked into the Santa Rita Jail, the CHP said.
