CHP seeks video of deadly crash involving 13 motorcycles as Sacramento coroner IDs victim
People who this weekend witnessed a car crash into a group of motorcyclists on Highway 50, killing one person, are asked to call the California Highway Patrol if they have video surveillance footage of the incident.
Officers were alerted Sunday morning to the crash involving 13 motorcycles near the off-ramp to Stockton Boulevard, said Officer Mark Leavitt, a spokesman for the CHP’s South Sacramento office. Four motorcyclists also suffered what the CHP called major to minor injuries.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Brian Shaw, 42, of Paradise. A GoFundMe described him as the leader in the Paradise’s local chapter of the Order E Clampus Vitus, a fraternal organization. He leaves behind a wife and twin children, both in college.
“Brian was devoted to his community with years of charitable work and helping others,” according to the GoFundMe’s organizer. “The most dear to his heart was working to raise money every year for the children of the ridge Christmas fund, raising money to provide Christmas gifts for family’s in need every year.”
CHP Officer Jeffery Lloyd, who is investigating the crash, said the video surveillance footage will help them accurately reconstruct the crash. The video could exonerate the right people or establish fault if someone should shoulder blame, he said.
Leavitt said Sunday it does not appear that the driver intentionally hit the group.
The preliminary investigation showed the car was traveling in the same direction as the motorcycles. Officers are also still investigating if the car first crashed into the motorcycles or vice versa, Lloyd said.
Investigators have interviewed all the individuals involved in the incident, but video footage provides the raw images of what happened, Lloyd said.
Shaw was a devoted father who dedicated much of his time to helping charities, according to the GoFundMe. The fundraiser is collecting money to help with Shaw’s burial and with his children’s tuition.
“Anyone who knew him knows what a devoted father he was and how much his children meant to him,” the GoFundMe’s organizer wrote. “Please pray for this family that they can find peace and comfort in our Lord.”
Anyone with video surveillance footage of the incident should call the CHP’s South Sacramento office at 916-897-5600 and ask for Officer Lloyd.
