Man killed, his son charged with murder after fight, shooting outside Sacramento County bar
Update: A Sacramento Superior Court judge determined there was insufficient evidence for Alferez Jr. to stand trial on a charge of murder in the inadvertent death of his father. He will stand trial for attempted murder and several other felonies.
Original story:
A man was killed and his son faces murder charges in his death after a fight at an Old Foothill Farms bar early Sunday spilled into the parking lot with deadly circumstances, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
Oscar Alferez Jr., 33, is being held without bail at Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of murder in the death of his father, Oscar Alferez Sr., and attempted murder of a second man after firing gunshots at the fleeing car that struck and killed his dad. Alferez Jr., will be arraigned on the charges Tuesday in Sacramento Superior Court.
Oscar Alferez Sr., 51, was run over and killed in the parking lot of Harry’s Sports Bar and Lounge in the 4500 block of Auburn Boulevard, the Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies said the man’s 33-year-old son had started a fight with an unidentified patron inside the bar about 1:30 a.m.
The brawl had moved outside when deputies say Alferez Sr., pulled out a gun and threatened the man. Alferez Sr., was knocked to the ground and disarmed during the fight. Alferez Jr., picked up his father’s weapon and fired shots at the unidentified man’s car as the man drove away, causing the man to strike Alferez Sr., who was still on the ground, deputies said.
The elder Alferez died at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the car stayed at the scene as deputies arrived; Alferez Jr. fled the scene.
No other injuries were reported.
Sheriff’s detectives obtained an warrant and arrested the younger Alferez on Sunday afternoon.
