Car hit speeds of 160 mph on Sacramento freeways during pursuit after sideshow, CHP says

Two people were detained this week in connection to speeding at more than 160 mph on Sacramento freeways after authorities accused them of participating in a so-called sideshow.

Sacramento police officers went to reports of “sideshow activity” about 10:30 p.m. Sunday near 24th Street and 69th Avenue in the city’s Meadowview neighborhood. Officers with the California Highway Patrol had already dispersed the crowd when police arrived, said Officer Allison Smith, a spokesperson with the Sacramento Police Department.

When the CHP officers arrived, the participants fled as officers tried to stop a vehicle in south Sacramento, the CHP’s Valley Division said in a social media post.

The CHP’s helicopter filmed video of a car performing stunts amid a dozens of people, at times narrowly missing spectators.

A vehicle that CHP said took part in the illegal display drove away from the scene and swerved through lanes of traffic, reaching more than 160 mph, according to the CHP.

The vehicle eventually pulled up in front of a home in the city of Sacramento. Its driver and passenger left the vehicle on foot, but CHP officials said officers detained them.
